Japan to Release New Bank Notes in July 2024

There will be new faces on Japan's 1,000 yen, 5,000 yen and 10,000 yen bank notes from July 2024. It is the first time in almost 20 years the country's notes have been redesigned.

The face of one scientist will replace another on the 1,000 yen notes. Shibasaburo Kitasato, who helped find a way to prevent tetanus and diphtheria, will replace Hideyo Noguchi on the new notes. The other side will also have a different picture. Instead of Mount Fuji by Lake Motosuko, it will now show The Great Wave off Kanagawa, Katsushika Hokusai's famous 19th century artwork.

On the 5,000 yen notes, Umeko Tsuda replaces author Ichiyo Higuchi. Umeko Tsuda was a pioneer in women's education. The back of these notes will show wisteria flowers.

Eiichi Shibusawa, known as Japan's "father of capitalism," will be the new face on the front.

Shibusawa helped create hundreds of companies in Japan. He replaces author Yukichi Fukuzawa on the notes. The Tokyo Station building will be on the back of the new 10,000 yen notes.

According to the Bank of Japan, all of the new notes will also have "three-dimensional holograms" to help prevent forgeries. The Bank of Japan said this is the first time anywhere in the world that this has been used. This will mean that the new faces on the notes will look as if they are moving around when the notes are lifted up.
